EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 3-seed Michigan Wolverines (17-6 overall, 7-3 in Big Ten) rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the upset-minded No.6-seed Northwestern Wildcats (4-14 overall, 0-10 in Big Ten), 4-2 in a first-round game of the 1999 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament.
The Wildcats started the game in impressive fashion when Amy Haase (Sr, Carmel, Ind.) fired home a shot from the top of the circle, giving NU a 1-0 lead with 6:54 remaining in the first half. However, the Wolverines answered less than three minutes later when Kelli Gannon redirected a pass from Catherine Foreman.
Just two and a half minutes into the second half, Nicole Smith (So., Warnbro, W. Australia) took a pass from Lindsay Wright (Jr., St. Catharines, Ontario) on a penalty corner to give NU its second lead of the afternoon. Once again, the Wolverines came back in strong fashion. With 24:39 remaining, Gannon converted a penalty corner with assists from Courtney Reid and Jeanne Shin. Just over a minute later, the trio connected on another penalty corner to give UM a 3-2 lead. Jocelyn LaFace added an insurance goal with 11:35 remaining in the game.
On Sunday, Haase was named to the Big Ten all-tournament team.
