Wildcat Women's Swimming Maintains Lead; Men In Third

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The 10th-ranked Northwestern women's swimming and diving team will bring a small lead into tomorrow's final day of competition at the Northwestern Invitational. The women hold a slim lead (532-521.5) over Arizona State. On the men's side, the 'Cats remain in third place, 110 points behind second-place SMU.

For the second consecutive day, the women were victorious in the opening relay, as the team of seniors Courtney Allen (Monument, Colo.), Amy Balcerzak (Sharon, Pa.) and Dominique Diezi (Zurich, Switzerland) and sophomore Merritt Adams (Norcross, Ga.) won the 200 medley relay in 1:43.83. Balcerzak also was the winner in the 100 breaststroke, posting a time of 1:03.31. Junior Tashy Bohm (Long Valley, N.J.) led a strong Northwestern contingent in the 100 backstroke, winning the event in a time of 56.68. Freshman Susie Sample (LaGrange, Ill.) finished third and Diezi took fifth.

On the men's side, freshman Eugene Kim (Flossmoor, Ill.) posted the top finish of the day, finishing third in the 100 breaststroke (57.25). Junior Steve Steketee (Golden, Colo.) finished fourth in the 200 free (1:39.41).

The meet concludes tomorrow, with preliminaries beginning at 9 a.m., finals start at 3:30 p.m.
