Cross Country Finishes Seventh at Big Ten Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's cross country finished seventh at the Big Ten championships Saturday. The race was held in State College, Pa., and hosted by Penn State.

Wisconsin successfully defended its title for the fourth straight year, recording the top three spots and scoring 25 points to win easily. Michigan was second with 95 points, while Minnesota had 98 points. They were the only three Big Ten schools ranked nationally entering the meet.

Northwestern nearly bested Purdue for sixth place, but scored 177 points to the Boilermakers' 172. Michigan State (106) was fourth while Indiana (132) was fifth.

Freshman Karen Rogers was the top finisher for Northwestern, placing 19th in a time of 17:54.02 over the 5-kilometer course. Jennifer Anderson was 32nd in 18:16.21, Rachel Evjen was 34th in 18:19.65, Mary Beth Ellis was 42nd in 18:26.99 and Shannon McGowan was 53rd in 18:45.71 to round out the team's scoring.

Erica Palmer of Wisconsin won the individual title in a time of 16:46.93, followed by fellow Badgers Erin Aufderheide (17:06.54) and Beth Brewster ((17:16.27).

The race was the first of the championship season for the Wildcats, who will run in the NCAA District 5 championships on November 13 in Champaign, Ill.
