EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's soccer team built up a 2-0 lead on Illinois Sunday afternoon, but squandered it away in the second half and had to settle for a 2-2 tie on Lakeside Field.
The draw put NU's record at 2-8-1 (0-5-1 Big Ten), while the Fighting Illini's record is now 8-3-1 (2-2-1 Big Ten).
The Wildcats looked like they might seize control of the contest in the opening half, scoring a pair of goals. The first came from Brooke Bell, who received a pass from Kristen Palmer and walked in at 17:34. Palmer was again the feeder five minutes later, this time bending a corner kick in that Sara Bodine converted.
However, in the second half Illinois came to life and drew level. Lisa Baldwin, coming off the bench, netted the first goal at the 69:43 mark, and then Lindsay Johnson knotted the game with a 14-yard shot from the left side with just 2:53 left in regulation.
The teams battled through two 15-minute overtime periods without determining a winner.
Illinois outshot the Wildcats, 16-13, and forced Erin Ekeberg to make six saves. Amy Bessette had five stops for the Illini.
Northwestern will be back in action on Lakeside Field Wednesday afternoon, hosting Marquette in a 3 p.m. kickoff.
