EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern University field hockey team lost in the first overtime to Michigan State Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field. After a gallant comeback by the Wildcats, the Spartans scored just four minutes into overtime to hand the Cats their ninth loss in the conference.
The Spartans jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Adrienne Miroslaw and Marleen Tuip, but NU made it 2-1 by halftime on a goal by senior Kristy Whitman (Palymra, Pa./Palymra) with just 2:25 remaining.
The 'Cats then turned up the defense in the second half, holding MSU to just two shots. Meanwhile, Northwestern evened the score when Colleen Hotz (St. Louis Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) redirected a Whitman shot with 1:47 remaining on the game clock.
Amy Haase (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) picked up her team leading 11th assist on the year while Whitman and Jodie Condie (St. Louis Mo./Villa Duchesne) also picked up assists.
Northwestern will be back in action next Saturday, traveling to play Iowa.
