EVANSTON, Ill. - Despite four Wildcats tallying double figures in kills, Northwestern could not break into the win column as Michigan took a 3-1 decision Saturday night in Ann Arbor. The loss dropped the ?Cats to 2-16 (0-8 Big Ten), while the Wolverines improved to 11-6 (3-5 Big Ten).
Game scores were 15-13, 11-15, 15-6, 15-13.
Carmen Burbach led the ?Cats with 17 kills and added eight digs, while Leah Ackerman had 16 kills to the Wildcats efforts. Jennifer Zagorski contributed 11 kills and recorded her ninth double-double of the season with a career-high 25 digs. Finally, Sarah Ballog had 11 kills, two solo blocks and four block assist in the contest. As a team, the ?Cats had a season-best 65 assist (led by Kelly Meyer's 54) and a season-best three solo blocks.
Michigan outhit the ?Cats .233-.190 and collected 75 kills and 89 digs in the win. Joanna Fielder led the Wolverines with 20 kills, one solo block and five block assist. Defensively, Shannon Melka had 24 digs and Alija Pittenger recorded 23.
The Wildcats will be back in action Friday, October 22 at Welsh-Ryan Arena, taking on Purdue to kick off the ?Women in Sport? weekend at Northwestern.
