Sandy Stap Clifton

In 10 years as Northwestern’s head coach, Sandy Stap Clifton compiled a 216-74 (.745) overall record including a 77-10 mark in Big Ten play, and built a dominating program that set the stage for women’s tennis to be a powerhouse for the Wildcats for decades to come.
Stap Clifton presided over four-consecutive undefeated Big Ten seasons from 1983-86 and won a pair of conference crowns in that span. She took NU to six-straight NCAA Championship appearances from 1982-87, finishing in the top ten in each of those seasons. The Wildcats were a program-best fifth-place in the NCAA in 1986 and 1987.
During her tenure, Northwestern won 15 All-Big Ten honors and had five All-Americans. In 1987, Stap Clifton coached Katrina Adams and Diane Donnelly to the NCAA doubles championship.
