Dr. J. Andy Walsh joined Northwestern Sport Psychology Services in August 2022 as the Postdoctoral Fellow in Sport Psychology. Dr. Walsh provides mental health and mental performance services for Northwestern student-athletes and teams, working collaboratively with Sports Medicine and coaching staffs to optimize student-athletes’ well-being. Prior to becoming a postdoctoral fellow, during the 2021-22 academic year Dr. Walsh worked at Northwestern University’s Counseling and Psychological Services as a Doctoral Intern in Psychology. In this role, he provided mental health services to the general student population and served as a co-sport psychology consultant to the Northwestern Women’s Field Hockey team during the 2021 season.
Dr. Walsh earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Wabash College in 2014, his master of arts in counseling and master of science in sport and exercise psychology from Ball State University in 2017, and his Ph.D. in counseling psychology with a focus in sport psychology from the University of North Texas in August 2022. He is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant® through the Association of Applied Sport Psychology. Prior to his current work with Northwestern student-athletes, Dr. Walsh provided mental health and mental performance services to NCAA Division I and III athletic teams, as well as youth, college, and elite-level athletes and professionals. Dr. Walsh currently resides in Lakeview with his wife, Ali, and their rescue lab Muggsy.
Education:
