Shannon Smith (Women's Lacrosse, 2009-12)

Northwestern’s all-time leading goal scorer with 254, Shannon Smith won the 2011 Tewaaraton and Honda Sports Awards as the National Player of the Year. She was a three-time IWLCA first-team All-American, a three-time All-ALC first-team choice and a two-time MVP of the NCAA Championship, leading NU to the national title during her junior and senior seasons.

Smith burst onto the national scene as a sophomore in 2010, scoring 69 goals to pick up her first All-America nod. The season was a prelude to one of the finest offensive seasons in the sport’s history in 2011, when Smith broke the NU record for goals with 86 while tallying 128 points, the seventh-best total ever in Division I.

In addition to her All-America and National Player of the Year awards in her sport, Smith won the Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year honor in 2011, just the fourth Wildcat in school history to earn that distinction.

Smith concluded her career with a third-straight All-America honor in 2012 and picked up the MVP award at the NCAA Championship for the second-straight season. She ended up in the top-10 all-time in NCAA Division I history in points and goals. Her 58 career points in the NCAA Tournament ranked second all-time at the time of her graduation.
