Howard J. Trienens (Honorary Inductee)
Howard J. Trienens is a Partner in the Chicago law firm of Sidley Austin LLP and served from 1976 to 1993 as Chairman of the firm's Executive Committee. In 1980 to 1986, he also was Senior Vice President and General Counsel of AT&T. He is a Trustee of Searle Family and Charitable Trusts and has served as a director of G. D. Searle Co. and R. R. Donnelley & Sons Co.
Mr. Trienens was Chairman of the Northwestern University Board of Trustees from 1986 to 1996. He currently serves on the Executive, Finance, Investments, Educational Properties, Governance and Nominations, and Northwestern Medicine Committees. He has been a Trustee since 1967. He was a member of the Presidential Search Committee in 2008 as well as 1993 to 1994, 1984 and 1970 presidential searches. He is a life member of the J. H. Wigmore Society and a member of the John Evans Club. Mr. Trienens became a Life Trustee in 2000.
Mr. Trienens received a Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University's J.L. Kellogg School of Management in 1945 and a Juris Doctor degree from the Northwestern University Law School in 1949. In 1950 to 1952 he served as law clerk to Chief Justice of the United States Fred M. Vinson.
In recognition of his continuing generosity to Northwestern, the state-of-the-art practice facility accompanying the renovation of Welsh-Ryan Arena will be named the Trienens Performance Center.
Mr. Trienens’ daughter and fellow trustee, Nan Trienens Kaehler, received her Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Northwestern University. Mr. Trienens has had two grandsons graduate from Northwestern’s Robert McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science majoring in Computer Science. His granddaughter graduated from the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, after spending a year in France in the Study Abroad Program.
