Fay "Reb" Russell (Football, 1929-32)
Russell, an All-American fullback at Northwestern, led the East All-Star team to a 7-0 victory at the seventh annual East-West Shrine game in 1932. His personal yardage gained in that game was only four short of the yardage gained by the entire West team. He transferred to Northwestern from the University of Nebraska, where he played as an all-conference quarterback.
Notre Dame Coach Knute Rockne called him the "the greatest fullback" he had ever seen. After graduating from NU, Russell received an offer to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. He also made several Hollywood movies, including The All-American and 12 Westerns. Russell retired to a ranch near Coffeyville, Kan., where he died in 1978.
