Stephen E. Reid (Football, 1934-36)
Named an All-Big Ten and All-America guard in 1936, Reid was captain of the 1936 team that won the school's first undisputed Big Ten championship. He was named to Sports Illustrated's "Silver Anniversary" All-America football team and 1961, and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1985.
A graduate of Northwestern's Medical School, Reid served as a major in the US. Amry Medical Corps, earning three Bronze Star medals. He returned to Northwestern after the war and became the Wildcats team physician and surgeon. His research on football helmets that measured the intensities of impacts in order to reduce head and neck injuries earned him a nomination for the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1984.
