Joseph Newton (Track & Field, 1948-51)

Newton was a sprinter for the Northwestern track team from 1948-51, but he made his mark during more than 40 years as a high school track coach. He has earned 13 Illinois track and cross country Coach of the Year Awards and has coached his teams to 19 Illinois state cross country titles and 217 total conference championships.

In 1988, Newton became the first high school track coach to serve on the U.S. Olympic coaching staff, when he was named assistant manager of the U.S. Men's Olympic Track Team. He is a member of the U.S. Olympic Development Track and Field Committee and was enshrined in the U.S. Track and Field Federation's Hall of Fame in 1975. In 1990, Newton was inducted into the Chicago Sports Hall of Fame.
