George McKinnon ( Baseball, 1937-41)

George McKinnon may be best remembered as Northwestern's all-time winningest baseball coach with 304 victories during his reign from 1962-81.

However, George enjoyed a successful baseball career himself at NU. In 1940, he was named All-Big Ten as a shortstop and helped lead Northwestern to the conference championship. He went on to play one year in the Chicago Cubs minor league system before serving four years with the Navy during World War II.

George began his illustrious coaching career as a football assistant to Ara Parseghian in 1961. During his 20 years as head baseball coach, George led the Wildcats to five 20-win seasons including a career best 28-12 record in 1973.

In 1978, he earned an award for 25 years of leadership and devotion to collegiate baseball from the American Association of College Baseball Coaches. He is also a member of the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
