Retiring as assistant athletic director in 1974 after 50 years of service at Northwestern, Fisher excelled as player, coach, and administrator. He started at end on NU's first Big Ten championship football team in 1926, and captained the 1926 and 1927 basketball teams, winning all-Big Ten honors both years.
In 1952, Fisher became the head coach of the men's basketball team, a position he held for five years. The Waldo Fisher-Frank McGrath Award is given annually to the most valuable player of the Northwestern-DePaul basketball game in his honor.
