Jim Burns (Basketball, 1965-67)

Burns, one of NU's basketball All-Americans, left the University in 1967 as the school's most prolific basketball scorer. He continues to rank among the top scorers among athletes who played in the era prior to freshman eligibility.

Burns' name is found frequently in the Wildcat basketball career records book. Besides scoring average, he is among the all-time leaders in field goals made and attempted, free throws made and attempted. He scored a career-best 37 points in the Wildcats' 111-97 win over Purdue in 1966.

Burns led the Wildcats in scoring in all three of his three seasons and was accorded All-America status following his senior season of 1966-67. He also was named an Academic All-American that year, NU's first such honoree in basketball. He was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten choice (1966 and '67) and earned All-Big Ten honors on the court as a senior. He shared the team's Most Valuable Player honors with Mike Waver in 1967.

Burns was honored as a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Balfour Silver Anniversary All-America Team. The 1992 honorees were recognized at the Final Four in Minneapolis.
