Sybil Bauer (Swimming, 1924-26)
As a sophomore, Bauer was one of five NU students to win a place on the 1924 U.S. Olympic team, winning the gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke. She was also the president of the Women's Athletic Association at Northwestern, and she participated in basketball and field hockey as well as swimming.
Bauer set 23 world records in women's swimming from 1921-1926, and she became the first woman to break a men's swimming record when she won the 440-yard backstroke during a 1922 meet. During following years, she broke every women's backstroke record from 50 to 400 yards. Bauer was posthumously inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1967.
