Northwestern Takes Series with 9-6 Victory over Indiana

5/3/2026 7:22:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. – A five-run second inning propelled Northwestern to a 9-6 win over Indiana in Sunday's rubber match at Miller Park.

Northwestern secured its first series victory over Indiana since 2022 and its first series victory over IU in Evanston since 2006.

OF Jack Lausch homered for the second straight game, crushing a three-run blast to right field in the second to give NU the lead. The Chicago native went 2-for-2 with a homer, three RBI, three runs scored and a career-high three walks.

Indiana (21-27, 7-17 Big Ten) grabbed an early lead on a leadoff home run by C Hogan Denny.

Northwestern (19-25-1, 7-17 Big Ten) answered immediately, tying the game at one apiece on a sacrifice fly by C Jay Slater, scoring Lausch.

The Wildcats' offense exploded for five runs on two homers in the second inning, doing all of their damage in the second with two outs. Lausch put NU ahead with a three-run blast to right, and two batters later, Ruiz went deep to left field, scoring Kucherak to put Northwestern ahead, 6-1.

The Hoosiers pulled two runs back on a two-run home run by INF Jake Hanley in the third to trim the Wildcat lead to 6-3.

Slater picked up his second RBI of the day in the fourth, driving in Lausch again to extend NU's lead to four.

In the bottom of the seventh, McElfatrick slugged a solo shot to left field to add on to the lead. McElfatrick's homer is the 33rd of his career, three shy of NU's career home run record holder Eric Mogentale (36, 1981-84).

IU plated three in the top of the eighth to trim NU's advantage to two, before INF Nick Barron blasted a solo shot to provide insurance for NU. Barron and fellow first-year INF Jake Yang  both collected a career-high three hits in the victory.

RHP James Whitaker (1) earned his first career save, working a 1-2-3 ninth inning with a strikeout to slam the door.

RHP Drew Dickson (1-1) tossed 3.2 scoreless, hitless innings in relief, walking three and striking out two.

Northwestern closes out its homestand on Tuesday when it hosts Illinois State at 3:30 p.m. CT at Miller Park.
