NU Closes West Coast Trip With Win Over Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. — No. 60 Northwestern secured a 4-3 victory over No. 53 Oregon on Sunday afternoon to cap off its West Coast trip after falling to No. 20 Washington on Friday night.
First-year Marelie Raath won a third-set tiebreak in the deciding match to clinch the contest for the Wildcats (11-7, 4-3 Big Ten). The victory over the Ducks (11-8, 2-5 Big Ten) marked Northwestern's highest-ranked victory of the campaign.
The Wildcats opened the match by dropping the doubles point, despite the No. 1 duo of sophomore Erica Jessel and first-year Margot Phanthala — the No. 27 doubles team in the county — prevailing 6-3.
Northwestern captured the lead with junior Autumn Rabjohns and junior Neena Feldman tabbing straight-set victories in singles. At No. 3 singles, Rabjohns triumphed 6-2, 6-1 for her team-best 12th singles win of the campaign. Nine of her wins have come with her dropping just five games or fewer. Feldman followed up Rabjohns' result with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 2 position.
Sophomore Erica Jessel, at No. 5 singles, helped the Wildcats pull ahead 3-1 by winning 6-2, 1-6, 6-1. She holds a 6-1 record in singles on the season.
Oregon won on the No. 1 and No. 4 courts to even the match at three apiece, but Raath's heroics at the No. 6 slot attained the victory for Northwestern. In a thrilling match, she pulled out a 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-4) win.
On Friday night, the Wildcats fell 4-0 to the Huskies (15-1, 6-1 Big Ten), losing the doubles point, No. 5, No. 1, and No. 2 singles matches. However, Northwestern remained competitive in all unfinished matches.
At the No. 4 spot, sophomore Mika Dagan Fruchtman led 7-5, 2-1 when the match was abandoned. After dropping the first set 4-6, Rabjohns, at No. 3, claimed the second set 6-4 and led 1-0 in the third set when play concluded. Similarly, on Court 5, Raath claimed her second set 6-3 after falling in the first set.
The Wildcats head home to kick-start a five-match homestand by hosting No. 75 Michigan State on Saturday, April 4, at noon CT and No. 18 Michigan on Sunday, April 5, at 2 p.m. CT.
