Wildcats Drop Big Ten Opener to No. 25 Trojans

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern fell in the series opener to No. 25 USC, 15-1 in seven innings on Friday afternoon.
OF Jack Lausch slugged his team-high fourth homer of the season in the bottom of the sixth for the Wildcats (6-8-1, 0-1 Big Ten), a solo shot off the batter's eye in center field.
LHP Mason Edwards (4-0) continued his strong start to the year for the Trojans, surrendering his first run of the season. In 6.0 innings pitched, Edwards allowed one run on three hits and one walk, while striking out 10.
After both pitchers retired the first six batters they faced, USC (18-0, 4-0 Big Ten) drew first blood in the top of the third, taking a 4-0 lead on two two-run home runs.
The Trojans continued to extend their lead with two runs in the top of the fourth, six in the top of the fifth, an unearned run in the sixth and two in the seventh.
LHP Ryan Weaver (0-2) surrendered 11 runs on 10 hits in 4.0 innings of work.
The Wildcats and Trojans will close out the series with a Saturday doubleheader, beginning at 11 a.m. CT. Game two will begin 45 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
