No. 14 UCLA Evens Series, Sets up Saturday Rubber Game

LOS ANGELES – No. 14 UCLA evened the weekend series at one game apiece on Friday night, defeating Northwestern 8-2 at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

UCLA (38-15, 21-8 Big Ten) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, scoring a pair on a two-run double by 1B Mulivai Levu, scoring LF Dean West and SS Roch Cholowsky to go ahead 2-0. The Bruins added three more in the bottom of the second. Cholowsky homered to center, scoring West, and 3B Roman Martin drove in Levu to put the Bruins up 5-0.

Northwestern (25-26, 13-16 Big Ten) fought back with a pair in the top of the fifth. 1B Tyler Ganus got the 'Cats on the scoreboard with an RBI double, scoring C Bennett Markinson. 2B Jacob Hand added another on a sacrifice fly, scoring RF Jackson Freeman to cut the lead to 5-2. The Bruins extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth with a pair and added one in the bottom of the seventh.

RHP Matthew Kouser (4-6) is credited with the loss, allowing five runs on six hits, walking one, hitting one, and fanning one in 1.2 innings pitched. LHP Christian Forniss was solid in relief, surrendering two runs on eight hits and striking out two in 4.1 innings pitched. Saturday's series finale is set for 3 p.m. CT. Northwestern can earn a Big Ten Tournament berth on Saturday with either a win or a loss by Michigan State.
