EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern will send four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia, Pa., next weekend. Evan Bates, Sam Cartella, Trevor Chumbley and Maxx Mayfield will represent the Wildcats at the Championships, which will take place March 20-22 at Wells Fargo Center.

Chumbley (157 lbs) and Mayfield (165 lbs) will both compete in their third straight NCAA Championships, while Bates (197 lbs) earned qualification for the second consecutive season. Cartella, a redshirt first-year, is set to make his NCAA Championships debut at 149 lbs.

Seeds for each Northwestern participant, which were released on Wednesday evening by the NCAA, follow.

149 lbs - No. 31 Sam Cartella
157 lbs - No. 20 Trevor Chumbley
165 lbs - No. 18 Maxx Mayfield
197 lbs - No. 16 Evan Bates

Cartella enters his first NCAA Championships with a 16-10 overall record. His redshirt first-year campaign was highlighted by a 6-4 victory by decision over then-No. 11 Kannon Webster, who would go on to finish as the Big Ten's runner-up at 149 lbs. Cartella received an at-large bid on Tuesday afternoon following the Big Ten Championships, and will face off with Big Ten Champion Ridge Lovett (Nebraska) in his first-round matchup next Thursday.

Chumbley also earned at-large selection to the NCAA Championships after a season that saw him ranked as high as ninth in the nation by InterMat at 157 lbs. He dropped just three matches during the regular season, and will step onto the national stage for the third time with a 13-6 overall record in 2024-25.

After finishing sixth at the Big Ten Championships over the weekend, Mayfield will return to the NCAA Championships with an 18-11 record. His regular season included 13 bonus-point victories and four wins over opponents ranked in InterMat's top-33 at the time of the bout. His victory over No. 14 Christopher Minto (Nebraska) at the conference championships added to that total and helped Mayfield on his way to the podium and an NCAA Championship bid.

Rounding out the group, Bates made it back-to-back Big Ten podium finishes and back-to-back trips to the NCAA Championships with a seventh-place finish at the Big Ten Championships. This season, Bates took down nine ranked opponents en route to a 19-10 overall record that kept him consistently in InterMat's top 15 wrestlers at 197 lbs.

The 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships will begin with the First Round at 11 a.m. CT on Thursday, March 20, and run through the Championship matches, scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 22. A full schedule, including broadcast networks, is available here.
