Northwestern Comes up Short at UIC

CHICAGO – Northwestern fell short to the UIC Flames on Wednesday, March 12, dropping its midweek matchup, 5-2 at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
Northwestern drew first blood, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. OF Zach Carlson reached on his first career hit and a two-run home run from UTL Tyler Ganus, his first of the season, put the 'Cats on the scoreboard.
UIC (3-13) responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single to cut the lead in half.
A pair of long balls from OF Terrick Thompson-Allen and C Jackson Bessette put the Flames ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the third. After a scoreless fourth inning, OF Luke Nowak added to the Flames' lead with an RBI single to left, driving in Thompson-Allen to make it 5-2 after five innings.
UIC used a combination of nine pitchers out of the bullpen to secure the win. LHP Bobby Barrera is credited with the win, striking out one in 1.0 scoreless inning of action.
LHP Black MacMillian (0-1) got his first start as a Wildcat, fanning three batters in 3.0 innings of work, allowing four runs on five hits. LHP Alex Grant worked 3.0 solid innings in relief, allowing just one run on two hits. RHP Jack Grunkemeyer and RHP Sam Hliboki each worked scoreless innings.
Northwestern is set to open up conference play with a three game series this weekend when it hosts Penn State at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. CT, with the game being streamed on B1G+.
