CARY, N.C. – Northwestern won its third in a row with a 5-1 win over Harvard on Saturday afternoon at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The Wildcats improved to 3-1 for the first time since 2003.
LHP Crawford Wade was sensational in his return to his home state. In seven scoreless innings of work, Wade struck out nine, walking one, hitting one batter, and allowing just one hit. Wade's nine strikeouts are the most by a Northwestern pitcher in a game since LHP Sam Garewal struck out 10 on May 13, 2023 at Michigan.'CATS WIN! ?? pic.twitter.com/214CY3IWTA

After both pitchers cruised through the first two innings, Northwestern (3-1, 0-0 Big Ten) drew first blood. OF Jack Lausch led off the inning with a double to left field, and INF Trent Liolios continued his hot start with a single to right center to drive him home. After Liolios advanced to second base on a failed pickoff attempt, UTL Tyler Ganus drove him home with a single down the left field line to double the Wildcat lead.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, NU took advantage of a walk and hit by pitch to tack on a few more runs. After OF Preston Knott walked and Tyler Ganus was hit by a pitch, OF Jackson Freeman singled through the right side to extend the Wildcat lead to 3-0. C Bennett Markinson followed that up with a base hit to center field to score Ganus and make it a 4-0 Northwestern lead.
Northwestern continued to take advantage of Crimson miscues, loading the bases in the top of the eighth on a throwing error and a pair of walks, and adding a fifth run on a wild pitch to extend its advantage to five runs.
Harvard (0-2, 0-0 Ivy League) opened the bottom of the eighth with a pair of doubles to get on the board and trim its deficit to 5-1. RHP Sam Hliboki responded to retire the next six batters in order and close out the win for the 'Cats.
