Mueller Honored on Wuerffel Trophy Watch List
8/2/2024 8:45:00 AM | Football
ATLANTA – Northwestern graduate linebacker Xander Mueller recorded another preseason honor, as he has been named to the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List for the 2024 season.
The Wuerffel Trophy is college football's premier award for community service and one of the most meaningful awards in collegiate sports and named after 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and Florida Gators great Danny Wuerffel.
Last season, Mueller was named All-Big Ten Third Team and totaled 110 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks, three interceptions, two passes broken up, and one forced fumble. He finished fourth in the conference in total tackles and eighth in tackles for loss, leading the Wildcats in stops behind the line of scrimmage for the second straight year. He became the first Wildcat since at least 2000 to post 100+ tackles, 5.0+ sacks and 3+ interceptions in the same season, and just the third player in the Big Ten since 2000. Against Iowa, he notched a career-high 19 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one pass broken up. Mueller's three interceptions were the most by a Big Ten linebacker since Northwestern's Blake Gallagher had three in 2019.
Mueller was one of 111 nominees from the Football Bowl Subdivision recognized on the watch list. Partnering with Allstate to unify college football's highest community service honors, 11 nominees will be named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and serve as a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy.
The 2024 Wuerffel Trophy recipient will be announced live on the Home Depot College Football Awards show on Dec. 12.
