ANN ARBOR, Mich. - No. 34 Northwestern concluded their Big Ten Tournament run in the semifinal round on Saturday in Ann Arbor, falling to the No. 12 Ohio State Buckeyes 4-1 at Varsity Tennis Center.
As they did in the regular season, the 'Cats opened the match on top after capturing the doubles point. Christina Hand and Justine Leong, ranked No. 59 by the ITA, dropped their match to No. 31 Irina Cantos Siemers and Luciana Perry. Both of the next two courts ended in Northwestern's favor, however; Sydney Pratt and Neena Feldman won 7-5 ahead of Maria Shusharina and Britany Lau, who also finished off a 7-5 victory.
In singles play, the Buckeyes came out dominant. Ohio State won the opening set on all six courts, though both Hand and Feldman forced their opponents into tiebreak games. From there, the 'Cats continued to fall behind, and Ohio State won at singles two, five, one and six to lock up the four necessary points to win the match and advance to the tournament championship.
Now, Northwestern will return to Evanston and await their first round NCAA Tournament assignment. The women's tennis selection show will occur Monday at 5:30 p.m. CT and can be viewed on NCAA.com.
