CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Northwestern fell 7-1 to Illinois on Saturday afternoon at Illinois Field.
Illinois (22-13, 9-2 Big Ten) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on an RBI double to right center by Colton Quagliano. The Illini doubled the lead on an RBI single by Cal Hejza, scoring Quagliano to take a 2-0 edge after two innings.
The Fighting Illini added on in the fourth with a two-run home run by Connor Milton, extending their lead to 4-0. Illinois plated another on an RBI single by Drake Westcott, extending its lead to 5-0.
Owen McElfatrick put Northwestern (12-22, 2-9 Big Ten) on the board with an RBI single, scoring Zach Selfon in the top of the eighth.
In the bottom half of the eighth inning, Milton capped off his 4-for-4 outing with another two-run home run, giving Illinois a 7-1 advantage.
Jack Dyke (1-1) surrendered two runs on five hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
Cooper Omans (4-1) earned the win for the Illini, conceding just one run on two hits, striking out four and walking three in 7.0+ innings of work.
Sunday's series finale is set for 1 p.m. CT on B1G+.
