EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern baseball came from behind to secure a 6-5 (10 innings) win over Maryland on Friday, April 12 at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park. Maryland opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Sam Hojnar. Matt McClure entered the game in relief of Nolan Morr and stranded the bases loaded to keep the deficit at one, heading into the bottom of the second.

Maryland added on in the top of the fourth with as bases-loaded RBI double by Jacob Orr, extending its lead to 4-0. In the bottom half of the frame, Northwestern cut the deficit in half on a two-run home run by Trent Liolios, bringing Bennett Markinson around to score. The Terrapins added a run in the top of the fifth, plating a run on a sacrifice bunt by Elijah Lambros to extend their lead to 5-2. A solo home run by Jackson Freeman in the bottom of the sixth, his seventh of the 2024 campaign, trimmed the Wildcat deficit to two runs. Freeman opened the bottom of the eighth with a single, which Bennett Markinson followed with a double, putting runners on second and third with nobody out for the 'Cats in the eighth. Vince Bianchina chipped away at the deficit with a sacrifice fly to center field, advancing Markinson to third and making it a one-run ballgame. One batter later, Liolios singled through the left side, scoring Markinson and tying the game. In the bottom of the 10th, Freeman led off, reaching base on a hit by pitch. Markinson singled, advancing Freeman to third base. Three batters later, Tony Livermore's RBI-single brought Freeman home, walking it off for the 6-5 win.   Garrett Shearer (2-7) earned the win for the 'Cats tossing 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit, walking three, and striking out two.
