COLLEGE PARK, Md. (March 9, 2024) – Trevor Chumbley secured a berth to the NCAA Championships to lead Northwestern wrestling as it began competition at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships today inside XFINITY Center in College Park, Md.

Chumbley, who is seeded ninth at 157 pounds, opened his day by grinding out a 5-2 win over eighth-seeded Joey Blaze (Purdue) to book his spot in the quarterfinal round.  After falling to top-seeded Levi Haines (Penn State), the St. Charles, Ill. native punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships with a decision win over Isaac Wilcox (Ohio State), 5-1.

Already guaranteed of a second Big Ten podium finish in as many years, Chumbley will battle Michigan State's Chase Saldate for seventh place on Sunday.

Competing at 197 pounds, eighth-seeded Evan Bates finds himself just one win away from a first career NCAA berth following today's competition.  Out of Chesterton, Ind., Bates wasted no time in providing fireworks as he dispatched Ben Vanadia (Purdue) by fall (1:51) to begin his day.  Following a setback against Aaron Brooks (Penn State), the top seed at 197 pounds, Bates cemented his spot on the podium with an 8-3 decision win over Gabe Sollars (Indiana).

Bates will take on John Poznanski (Rutgers) in Sunday's seventh-place match, with the winner securing the Big Ten's final automatic NCAA bid at 197 pounds.

A quartet of Wildcats are set to continue competition in extra matches, with NCAA implications on the line.  Massey Odiotti (125 pounds), Aiden Vandenbush (149 pounds), and Troy Fisher (184 pounds) will battle for ninth place at their respective weight classes, while Maxx Mayfield looks to continue his run in the 11th-place bracket at 165 pounds.
