Chumbley, Mayfield Advance On Following Day One Of NCAA Championships

Duo returns to action in consolation bracket on Friday morning
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (March 21, 2024) – Trevor Chumbley and Maxx Mayfield both scored upset wins as Northwestern wrestling opened action at the NCAA Championships today inside the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
After dropping a narrow 1-0 decision to No. 8 Peyton Robb (Nebraska) in the opening round at 157 pounds, Chumbley, who is seeded No. 25, matched up against another Big Ten Conference foe in consolation action, squaring off with No. 24 Chase Saldate (Michigan State). Holding on to a 1-0 edge after an escape to open the second period, the St. Charles, Ill. native scored a takedown with just over a minute remaining in the second frame to take a 4-0 lead en route to a 4-3 decision.
Mayfield bounced back from a defeat to No. 2 Mitchell Mesenbrink (Penn State) to open his day, upending No. 18 Connor Brady (Virginia Tech) in a consolation-round bout in the 165-pound bracket. Locked in a 5-5 deadlock entering sudden victory, Mayfield, the No. 31 seed, wasted no time, countering a Brady attack just 20 seconds into the extra period to seal an 8-5 triumph that marked the Lincoln, Neb. native's first career win at the national meet.
Competing in a preliminary matchup to begin the day, No. 33 Evan Bates grinded his way to victory. Making his debut at the NCAA Championships, Bates, out of Chesterton, Ind., tallied a first-period takedown on his way to a 4-3 triumph over No. 32 John Crawford (Franklin & Marshall).
Both Chumbley and Mayfield return to the T-Mobile Center tomorrow for day two of the NCAA Championships. Session III is set to begin at 11 a.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU before ESPN takes over coverage for Session IV at 7 p.m.
