NEW ORLEANS – Tulane used a seven-run eighth inning to come from behind and take Sunday's rubber match 12-7 over Northwestern.
Small ball and timely hitting spurred Northwestern to break through in the top of the first inning for the second time this series. Tony Livermore beat out an infield single to score Tyler Ganus, Bennett Markinson drove in Livermore, and Markinson scored on an RBI groundout from Trent Liolios to give the 'Cats a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Bennett Markinson followed that up with another RBI single in his next at bat to extend the Wildcat lead to 4-0 in the top of the third. In the top of the fourth, McElfatrick brought around Tyler Ganus with an RBI single to give the 'Cats a 5-0 lead.
Luke Benneche got the start for the Wildcats, throwing 3.1 innings, allowing three hits, two runs and four walks, while striking out five batters.
Cole Mascott made his first collegiate appearance, throwing 2.2 innings of one-run ball, allowing zero hits and striking out two.
Tulane scored two in the fourth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh to tie the game at five apiece heading to the top of the eighth.
Northwestern responded in the eighth inning to retake the lead behind an RBI double from Lorenzo Rios to give NU a 6-5 advantage. Tyler Ganus followed that up with an RBI single of his own, driving in Rios to make it 7-5.
Tulane responded with seven runs in the eighth, highlighted by a Connor Rasmussen grand slam, to take a 12-7 lead into the ninth inning.
Northwestern rallied in the ninth, pushing two runs across on a Zach Selfon RBI single and a wild pitch that scored Tony Livermore, but it wasn't enough as the 'Cats fell 12-9.
