EVANSTON, Ill. - Sam Garewal was named to the 2023 All-Big Ten Freshman Team and senior Stephen Hrustich was elected Third-Team All-Big Ten, the conference announced Tuesday. Michael Farinelli, a grad student, received the team's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
Garewal, a lefty, was one of Northwestern's most effective pitchers down the stretch. After splitting time between the bullpen and the rotation early on, he closed out his season with four straight starts, all of which lasted five innings or more. The first year was most impressive in conference play, allowing three earned runs or less in six of his eight Big Ten appearances. His two best outings came back-to-back in May, when he tossed 6.1 shutout innings against Indiana before spinning 5.1 innings with ten strikeouts the following weekend in Michigan. Garewal wrapped his season with 48 strikeouts, which led all Wildcat pitchers.
Hrustich receives his first All-B1G nod after posting career-best numbers this season in Evanston. The senior, one of two team captains, finished the year leading the Wildcats in most offensive categories; his .325 average, 54 hits and 31 RBI all ranked first among 'Cats. In his fourth year at Northwestern, Hrustich posted career highs in batting average, doubles (12), walks (27) and on-base percentage (.441) while transitioning to almost full-time outfield duty.
Farinelli completed his second year in Evanston as a grad student after transferring from Middlebury ahead of the 2022 season. He logged 12 starts in 13 appearances, tossing at least three innings for the 'Cats in every weekend of Big Ten play.
