'Cats Compete at Historic Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa — Thirteen 'Cats ran at the prestigious Drake Relays in the Thursday Night Distance Carnival and the Friday 4x1600m Relay.
Starting off on the blue oval were the Women's 5,000m sections. In the seeded section of the event, Rachel McCardell (16:17.01), Ava Earl (16:33.25), and Kalea Bartolotto (16:53.44) fought to the finish in a heavily competitive field.
In the unseeded section of the Women's 5,000, Junior Katherine Hessler aggressively gapped the field with 800m to go. Holding position, Hessler won the heat for the 'Cats and was just a second off her PR in the event (16:57.31). Running a gutsy race, Verbeke put herself in the mix of the lead pack for the entirety of the race and battled her way to a fourth-place finish (17:17.89). Finishing out the heat was Mia Mraz (17:32.82), Deepti Choudhury (17:39.45), and Abbie Draheim (17:59.49).
Capping off Thursday night was the Women's 10,000m. Fiona Lenth, Elizabeth Bulat, and Whitney Currie each made their debut in the event. Lenth ran a strategically sound race and finished in the Top 10 with a time of 36:04.04. Working together and staying gritty, Bulat (37:24.70) and Currie (38:54.78) closed out the night for the 'Cats.
Rachel McCardell and Ava Earl came back to compete in the 4x1600m relay on Friday with teammates Anna Hightower and Maddy Whitman. The team finished fourth overall with a time of 19:39.46.
The 'Cats will conclude the 2023 Outdoor Season on May 6th at the NIU Huskie May Classic.
