Northwestern Falls in Finale at Nebraska

4/16/2023 8:50:00 PM | Baseball

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Northwestern Wildcats got a boost from a three-hit afternoon for junior Tony Livermore, but couldn't prevent the sweep as they fell 18-5 to the Nebraska Cornhuskers Sunday.

Junior Luke Benneche (0-4) got the ball to start for Northwestern (5-26, 3-6 B1G) and took the loss. Ben Grable impressed out of the bullpen, allowing one hit and striking out two in a scoreless eighth.

Livermore's three-hit day led the Wildcats offensively. Senior Luke Tanner put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Sophomore Andrew Pinkston also chipped in for Northwestern, adding a home run.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Huskers scored early and often, putting up at least one run in each of the first seven innings. They hit seven home runs in the ballgame in addition to a triple and six doubles, contributing to 18 total runs.

Meanwhile, the Wildcats first put runs on the board in the sixth inning. Senior Stephen Hrustich broke the ice with a two-out solo home run off senior Jake Bunz.

The Wildcats' deficit was at 18-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard in the eighth inning. Northwestern picked up a run on Pinkston's two-out solo home run off of freshman Caleb Clark, which tightened the Cornhuskers lead to 18-2.

Northwestern held the Cornhuskers off the scoreboard before narrowing the gap to 18-5 in the ninth. Tanner's bases-clearing double drove in all three runs for the Wildcats. The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short.

GAME NOTES
» Tanner made an impact off the bench, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. It was his third multi-hit game of the year and his second game with three RBI or more.
» Hrustich has now reached base in 21 games straight.
» Grable extended his scoreless streak to 5.1 innings over three outings.
» Northwestern pitchers faced 48 Nebraska hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out nine.
