‘Cats Secure Seven NCAA Bids On Opening Day Of Big Ten Championships

DeAugustino, Tal-Shahar appear in semifinals at respective weight classes
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (March 4, 2023) – Seven Wildcats locked up bids to the upcoming NCAA Championships as Northwestern wrestling opened action at the Big Ten Championships today inside the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
In the team race, Northwestern finds itself in seventh place with 64.0 points. Penn State (120.0 points) sits atop the team leaderboard, while Iowa (108.5 points) and Nebraska (98.5 points) round out the top three.
Michael DeAugustino and Frankie Tal-Shahar led the Northwestern attack on the day, both battling towards semifinal-round berths.
Competing at 125 pounds, DeAugustino engineered a quarterfinal-round upset over third-seeded Matt Ramos of Purdue. After cruising past Michigan State's Tristan Lujan in the opening round, DeAugustino used a takedown and four-point near fall in the closing seconds of the match to seal a 9-1 major decision over Ramos. The Palm Coast, Fla. native went on to drop a razor thin 2-1 decision to second-seeded Liam Cronin (Nebraska) in the semifinals.
Tal-Shahar continued his impressive work of late, picking up wins over fourth-seeded Cayden Rooks (Indiana), 7-4, and fifth-seeded Jakob Bergeland (Minnesota), 7-5. The Delray Beach, Fla. product battled top-seeded Real Woods of Iowa until the very end in the semifinals, ultimately falling by a 3-0 final.
After falling in the quarterfinals, five Wildcats rallied during the consolation round to continue on to Sunday's action.
At 285 pounds, Lucas Davison finished with authority, taking just 100 seconds to dispatch Purdue's Hayden Copass by fall in his final bout of the day.
Trevor Chumbley notched a pair of upsets at 157 pounds. After dropping an 11-3 decision to top-seeded Peyton Robb (Nebraska), Chumbley upended No. 7 Michael Carr (Illinois), 2-1, and No. 5 Cobe Siebrecht (Iowa), 3-2, to punch his ticket to Sunday.
Maxx Mayfield finds himself headed to the national meet following a strong showing of his own in the consolation bracket at 165 pounds this evening. Mayfield, who picked up a 6-4 win in sudden victory over No. 11 Nick South (Indiana) before falling to No. 3 Patrick Kennedy (Iowa), 11-3, notched a pair of wins to finish the day, closing his night with a 3-2 victory over No. 8 Dan Braunagel (Illinois)
Third-seeded Yahya Thomas bounced back from a 6-4 quarterfinal-round setback in sudden victory to No. 6 Michael Blockhus (Minnesota) with an 8-3 win over No. 12 Michael Harrier (Illinois) at 149 pounds. Thomas went on to book his passage to Sunday via medical forfeiture.
Seeded fourth at 133 pounds, Chris Cannon notched two wins of his own during the consolation round. Following a comfortable 8-1 triumph over Henry Porter (Indiana), Cannon jumped all over No. 8 Brody Teske (Iowa) from the onset in a 9-4 victory.
The final day of the Big Ten Championships will begin at 12 p.m. (CT), with Session III set to feature consolation semifinals and seventh-place matches. Session IV, which is set to air on live Big Ten Network, will begin at 3:30 p.m. (CT) and will include first, third, and fifth-place matches.
