Northwestern Drops Opener to Purdue

3/31/2023 3:22:00 PM | Baseball

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Northwestern Wildcats got three hits from sophomore Alex Calarco, but fell 8-4 to the Purdue Boilermakers Friday at Alexander Field.

Junior Matt McClure (1-4) got the ball in his conference-leading seventh start for Northwestern (2-18, 0-1) and was solid through five innings, but ended up with the loss.

Calarco's three-hit day led the Wildcats offensively. Griffin Arnone put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with his fourth home run of the year, a walk and an RBI. Senior Stephen Hrustich also contributed for Northwestern, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Wildcats first put runs on the board in the third inning. Northwestern got on the board thanks to Hrustich's RBI double with one out.

The game remained tied until the fifth inning, when the Wildcats got going again on offense. Northwestern picked up a run on Arnone's leadoff home run off of sophomore Khal Stephen, which brought the Wildcats lead to 2-1.

Northwestern's lead evaporated in the sixth, when the Boilermakers strung extra-base hits together to take a 3-2 lead. By the time the eighth inning came around, that had turned into a 6-2 Purdue advantage. The Wildcats added two in the top of the eighth, but were unable to get any closer, as Purdue added two runs to their tally on the way to an 8-4 final.

GAME NOTES
» Calarco led the Wildcats, picking up three hits in the ballgame to extend his hitting streak to five.
