RALEIGH, N.C. — The 'Cats traveled to the home of North Carolina State this weekend to compete at the Raleigh Relays and kick off off the Outdoor Track Season over spring break. Rachel McCardell and Kalea Bartolotto opened up the action for the squad on Thursday night with gritty efforts in the Invitational section of the 10,000m. McCardell crossed the line in a time of 33:52.32, shattering the previous school record of 34:17.48 set by Aubrey Roberts in 2018. Her performance is currently the fourth fastest in the Big Ten and is a top-20 mark in the NCAA. Bartolotto finished in a time of 34:36.51, which is currently the fifth fastest in the Big Ten.
Returning to the track on Friday evening, the crew of Ava Earl, Anna Hightower, and Olivia Verbeke toed the line in the 5,000m. Under the lights, the 'Cats rounded the 400-meter loop and strung together gutsy lap after gutsy lap. In the fourth heat, Verbeke finished in a time of 17:22.01. An hour later in the seventh heat, Earl left it all out on the track and crossed the line in a time of 16:25.18. This performance moves her up to the fourth position on Northwestern's all-time list in the event and is also the fourth fastest time in the Big Ten.
The 'Cats will return to action on April 8th back in their home state at the Illini Open in Champaign.
