Senior picks up pair of wins in sudden victory to continue tournament run
TULSA, Okla. (March 17, 2023) – Lucas Davison (285 pounds) locked up All-American distinction for the second time in his career to highlight Northwestern wrestling's second day of action at the NCAA Championships inside the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla.
After falling to top-seeded Mason Parris (Michigan), Davison found himself with his back to the wall against Yaraslau Slavikouski (Harvard). Locked in a 1-1 stalemate entering sudden victory, Davison came up with the deciding takedown 45 seconds into the extra session to earn his third All-American nod in a 4-2 decision. The Chesterton, Ind. native provided more dramatics to close the evening, punching his ticket to the consolation semifinals with a 3-1 sudden victory triumph over Cohlton Schultz (Arizona State).
A trio of Wildcats picked up wins in the second round of consolation action before bowing out in the following round. None were more thrilling than Trevor Chumbley's (157 pounds) matchup with Iowa's Cobe Siebrecht. Trailing 3-2 inside the final 30 seconds of the third period, Chumbley caught the Hawkeye in a cradle following a scramble, scoring the deciding fall with 17 seconds remaining to pick up his second win of the tournament.
Troy Fisher (174 pounds) stepped on the accelerator from the first whistle, racing out to a 10-1 lead on his way to a thorough 18-5 major decision over Alex Cramer (Central Michigan).
Frankie Tal-Shahar (141 pounds) took a similar approach to his tilt with Big Ten rival Kal Miller (Maryland), notching a pair of first-period takedowns en route to an 8-2 victory.
Davison, who is seeded ninth, will take on No. 2 Wyatt Hendrickson (Air Force) in the consolation semifinals, which will feature as part of Session V beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning.
