McCardell Sets School Record as 'Cats Compete at Boston University Valentine Invite

BOSTON, Mass. – The 'Cats traveled to the East Coast on Friday to compete at Boston University's Valentine Invitational. Rachel McCardell set the pace in the 3000m, shattering the school record with a mark of 9:02.90. This performance knocked 15 seconds off McCardell's previous personal record in the event and was her second school record breaking run of the 2023 Indoor Season.
Following McCardell on the track was the trio of Ava Earl, Anna Hightower and Maddy Whitman. All three ran to personal bests on the 200-meter oval, running 9:25.64, 9:31.56 and 9:59.15 respectively. Earl solidified her position on Northwestern's all-time top-10 list in the event at number three, while Hightower moved up to number five.
In the 5000m, Kalea Bartolotto ran a 16:36.04; moving her way up on the all-time list to the fourth position. She was followed on the track by Katherine Hessler and Olivia Verbeke. Hessler continued her streak of personal bests during the indoor season, running under 17 minutes for the first time and clocking a time of 16:56.63. This mark moved her to tenth all-time in the event. Verbeke finished capped off the night on the track with a personal record of her own, running 17:03.67.
In the morning sections of the 5,000m, Mia Mraz led the way with a time of 17:13.48, setting a new personal record and establishing the top-time ever by a Northwestern first-year. Fiona Lenth and Whitney Currie followed with 17:23.42 and 17:47.08.
The 'Cats will be back on the track next weekend when they compete close to home at the University of Chicago.
