Northwestern University Athletics

Positively Dr. Gragg – December 2023

Wildcats,

As we approach the end of the calendar year, I want to acknowledge, thank and turn our attention to the entire NUDAR staff.

We have grown to more than 250 committed and passionate members of the Northwestern Athletics family.

I recognize how much is going on behind-the-scenes, how much our staff does in their respective roles to ensure the success of our student-athletes and our sports programs. I am aware of the countless hours our team puts into honing their craft. I also acknowledge that this has not been an easy year.

This is not a nine-to-five profession. In many ways, it is the opposite of that – and our entire staff has embraced that calling. One of our department's core values in our strategic plan, R.I.S.E. Northwestern, is service and I see that every day in everything our staff does for our student-athletes.

I think of every team member who volunteers to help a colleague with a heavy workload. I think of every academic advisor that spends an extra 15 minutes helping a student-athlete. I think of every ankle-taping before practice, every uniform that gets laundered and put in a locker before a game.

Every member of our staff is committed to the holistic development of our student-athletes, to maximizing their experience while attending Northwestern. We want them to thrive in the classroom – as evidenced in our 98% Graduation Success Rate – and excel on the fields and courts. Every single role in our department contributes towards that north star. It is woven into the fabric of everything we do here at Northwestern Athletics because that is who we are.

Our department has a lot of positive momentum heading into the New Year. Our football program is playing in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl on December 23 versus Utah. For the second consecutive season, our men's basketball team defeated No. 1 Purdue. The Wildcats are the third program to ever defeat the same AP No. 1 opponent at home in consecutive seasons.

We want everyone to rest and recharge over the holidays, getting some much-needed time away from work and being with family and friends who mean the most to you.

I can't wait to see what we will accomplish in 2024! GO 'CATS!

Positively,

Dr. Gragg
