Junior one of 20 student-athletes nationally to be recognized
EVANSTON, Ill. (November 9, 2023) – Currently in the midst of a standout junior season, Northwestern University junior Lauryn Nguyen (Seattle, Wash./West Seattle) has been named as one of 20 student-athletes on the Final Fall Watch List for 2023-24 ANNIKA Award, which was announced on Thursday. Nguyen was the lone Big Ten Conference student-athlete recognized.
Nguyen, who currently holds a World Amateur Golf Ranking of 96, recently wrapped up a terrific fall campaign in which she posted a team-best 70.42 stroke average across 12 rounds of play. She tallied eight rounds at par or better, four of which came in the 60s, on her way to three straight top-10 finishes.
A two-time Big Ten Golfer of the Week selection this past fall, Nguyen picked up her first collegiate victory in early October as the Wildcats hosted the Windy City Classic in suburban Golf, Ill. The Seattle, Wash. product finished play at the Glen View Club with a scorching 11-under-par 205 (66-70-69) en route to claiming individual medalist honors as the 'Cats earned a runner-up finish in the team race.
After sharing ninth (73-69-70=212) at the Illini Women's Invitational, Nguyen capped off her fall campaign in style, handing in a four-under-par 209 (70-66-73) to tie for fifth at the Stanford Intercollegiate, where Northwestern placed second overall as a team and bested seven squads ranked above it in the Golfweek Women's Team Collegiate Rankings.
Created in 2014, the ANNIKA Award presented by Stifel is annually given to the top female Division 1 collegiate golfer; the winner voted on by players, coaches and members of the college golf media. Named for Annika Sorenstam, the award was created in partnership with the Haskins Foundation to acknowledge the top female golfer and to match the Haskins Award presented by Stifel, which acknowledges the top male Division I collegiate golfer. Rose Zhang (Stanford) became the ninth ANNIKA Award winner in 2023, and the third consecutive winner from Stanford.
