STILLWATER, Okla. – Northwestern heads to Oklahoma State University on Friday for the NCAA Midwest Regional looking to secure a spot at the NCAA National Championships. The women's 6k race will start at 10:30 a.m. CT.
Action will take place at the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course. The Wildcats are looking to get their first ever back-to-back automatic bid to Nationals, after claiming a second place finish at last year's Midwest Regionals.
Northwestern finished strong at the Big Ten Championships on October 27 with a sixth place finish, the second-highest by a Wildcat team in program history. First-Team All-Big Ten junior Katherine Hessler will lead the team into Regionals after finishing in fifth place out of 154 runners at the Big Ten Championships with a time of 21:10.0.
At the Regional Championships, the Top-2 performing teams will receive an automatic bid to the National Championships. Teams can also be qualified as one of the 13 at-large bids selected by the NCAA DI Cross Country Subcommittee. The Top-4 individual regional finishers that do not belong to an automatic qualifying or an at-large team will also secure an auto-bid to the National Championships.
Currently ranked third in the Midwest, head coach Jill Miller is prepared to lead the 'Cats to the National Championships once again. Last year, Rachel McCardell led the way for the 'Cats at Regionals finishing eighth with a time of 20:2.1 after knocking off eight seconds from her previous race.
