Women's Soccer Comes from Behind to Claim Season-Opener

MANHATTAN, Kan. – With the match tied 1-1 in the 69th minute, Northwestern sophomore Emma Phillips scored a goal that she or the fans in attendance won't forget anytime soon. The Munster, Ind. product connected on a bicycle kick goal in front of the net to lift NU to a 2-1 triumph over Kansas State in the 2022 season opener.
Senior Lily Gilbertson served a pass in front of the net, allowing Phillips' sensational finish.
NU (1-0) trailed 1-0 at halftime, but found its rhythm coming out of the locker room. Freshman Caterina Regazzoni scored the equalizer in the 64th minute on assists from senior Rowan Lapi and junior Josie Aulicino.
Northwestern pelted Kansas State's (0-1) defense, recording an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal. The 'Cats tallied 18 total shots.
Northwestern held a 6-3 lead in shots and a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal after the first half. The visitors controlled the ball the majority of the first stanza, with NU tallying four corner kicks. K-State scored its lone goal on a set piece in the sixth minute.
Graduate student goalkeeper Mia Raben recorded the win in her first match in purple after transferring from Wake Forest. Raben played the entire second half and posted one save. Reilly Fitzpatrick started in goal for the Wildcats.
The Northwestern soccer team continues its road swing in The Sunflower State by traveling to Kansas at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, Aug. 21.
