Fontes Named Big Ten Player of the Week

Evanston, IL - Ruben Fontes capped off a succesful season in Evanston as a graduate transfer with his first Big Ten Player of the Week honors, following Northwestern's series win over Minnesota.
The Davidson transfer hit .583 (7-for-12) with five runs, 10 RBI, two home runs and a double to help the Wildcats take their final Big Ten series of the season over Minnesota. In a high-scoring affair on Saturday, Fontes crushed a go-ahead RBI double in the ninth inning to take the lead against Minnesota with Northwestern needing a win to keep their postseason hopes alive.
He finished the weekend with a 1.167 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage.
Fontes is the first Wildcat to win the award since Ethan O'Donnell in March, as the outfield tandem combined to win both of Northwestern's Player of the Week Awards in 2022. Sean Sullivan was also named a Big Ten Pitcher of the Week this season, in addition to claiming a pair of Big Ten Freshman of the Week Awards.
