Ten Wildcats Qualify For NCAA Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. – Ten Northwestern wrestlers have qualified for the 2022 NCAA Championships taking place March 17-19 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
It is the third time in program history that 10 Wildcats have qualified for the NCAA Championships, along with the 1968 and 1970 seasons, tying the program record.
Michael DeAugustino (125 lbs), Chris Cannon (133 lbs), Frankie Tal-Shahar (141 lbs), Yahya Thomas (149 lbs), Ryan Deakin (157 lbs), David Ferrante (165 lbs), Troy Fisher (174 lbs), Jack Jessen (184 lbs), Andrew Davison (197 lbs) and Lucas Davison (285 lbs) will represent Northwestern in Detroit for NCAA wrestling's biggest stage.
Full seeds for each weight class were announced on Wednesday, March 9. Four different Wildcats earned Top-10 seeds in their respective weight class:
125 lbs - No. 10 seed Michael DeAugustino
133 lbs - No. 10 seed Chris Cannon
141 lbs - No. 26 seed Frankie Tal-Shahar
149 lbs - No. 19 seed Yahya Thomas
157 lbs - No. 2 seed Ryan Deakin
165 lbs - No. 32 seed David Ferrante
174 lbs - No. 23 seed Troy Fisher
184 lbs - No. 33 seed Jack Jessen
197 lbs - No. 28 seed Andrew Davison
285 lbs - No. 9 seed Lucas Davison

Nine wrestlers earned automatic bids for the NCAA Championships through competition at the Big Ten Championships last weekend. Yahya Thomas's second-straight at-large bid finalized Northwestern's NCAA Championships competitors. Thomas has a history of success as an at-large bid, coming in third at last year's NCAA Championships as the 25th-seed at 149 lbs.
Ryan Deakin's third Big Ten title highlighted the Wildcats' trip to the Big Ten Championships. Northwestern finished in fifth place, its highest finish in Big Tens since 2006.
Deakin is the first Big Ten wrestler in 65 years to win three Big Ten titles at 157 lbs, after defeating No. 3 Will Lewan of Michigan in a 7-2 decision.
Five other Wildcats earned Top-5 finishes at the Big Ten Championships.
Michael DeAugustino placed fourth at 125 lbs, while Troy Fisher finished fourth at 174 lbs. Chris Cannon (133 lbs), David Ferrante (165 lbs), and Lucas Davison (285 lbs) all finished in fifth place in their respective weight classes.
Frankie Tal Shahar placed 7th at 141 lbs and Andrew Davison came in 9th at 197 lbs to round out the 'Cats eight Top-10 finishes.
Northwestern earned a Top-10 finish at last year's NCAA Championships, its highest finish under head coach Matt Storniolo. Ryan Deakin and Yayha Thomas each finished in third place, while Chris Cannon placed seventh to all earn All-American honors.
