Evanston, IL - Ethan O'Donnell and Jay Beshears were named Collegiate Baseball National Players of the Week and O'Donnell was named Big Ten Player of the Week after Northwestern won three games over Southern Illinois and Butler over the weekend.
O'Donnell, a member of the 2021 Big Ten All-Freshman Team, drove home 13 RBIs in four games with four home runs, including a go-ahead grand slam on his birthday. That blast came as part of a six-RBI game in a win over the Salukis, as Northwestern ran their winning streak to seven games this weekend, the team's longest since 2017.
A big reason why was O'Donnell's 1.333 slugging percentage and .524 on-base percentage, as the sophomore won his first career Big Ten Player of the Week award.
Beshears, another member of the Northwestern's 2021 recruiting class, hit 4 home runs with 4 doubles and collected 11 hits as he hit .579 in 4 games. He also racked up a 1.316 slugging percentage. The sophomore was named, along with O'Donnell, as a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week, helping Northwestern become the only team in the nation with two players to receive the award this week.
Northwestern joins Nebraska, the favorite in the Big Ten Preseason Coaches' Poll, as the only teams in the conference with a Big Ten Player of the Week (O'Donnell), Pitcher of the Week (Sean Sullivan) and Freshman of the Week (Sullivan) on the roster.
The Wildcats open Big Ten play on Friday with a three-game series against Indiana in Bloomington.
