Northwestern heads to Columbia in search of coveted spot at 2022 NCAA Championships
COLUMBIA, Missouri -- Northwestern returns to Gans Creek Cross Country Course on Friday, November 11, for the 2022 NCAA Midwest Regional, vying for a coveted spot at the NCAA Championships. The women's 6K race will begin at 11 a.m. CT and will be streamed live on YouTube.

Currently ranked No. 2 in the Midwest and No. 30 in the nation, head coach Jill Miller's lineup will include seniors Rachel McCardell and Olivia Verbeke, juniors Kalea Bartolotto and Ari Marks, and sophomores Ava Earl, Katherine Hessler and Anna Hightower, with senior Hannah Hall and rookie Maddy Whitman on deck as alternates.
A total of 35 women's programs will compete in Missouri to earn a spot at the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, November 19 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Friday's meet is one of nine qualifiers across the country, and the Top-2 teams from each Regional will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. Northwestern finished fourth at the 2021 Midwest Regional.
Teams also can qualify as one of the 13 at-large teams chosen by the NCAA DI Cross Country Subcommittee based on performance at Regionals. Individually, the first four finishers who do not belong to an automatic qualifier or at-large team automatically advance to the Championships, so long as they finish in the Top-245 in their region. Two runners are also selected at-large to compete in the championships as the highest placing individuals at a regional who weren't automatic qualifiers.
This will be the second time this season Northwestern runs in Columbia, as three Wildcats raced into the Top-8 at the 2022 Gans Creek Classic in September to propel the team to a third-place result in the 24-team field. McCardell paced the squad in third-place (20:36.6), while Marks crossed the line in seventh (20:38.5) narrowly edging out Bartolotto in eighth (20:38.8) to make NU the only team in the field with three finishers in the Top-8.
