Northwestern cross country ranked No. 29 in nation, and No. 2 in Midwest, after win in Peoria

EVANSTON, Illinois - Northwestern cross country has returned to the nation's Top-30 for the first time since 2002 following a win at the Bradley Pink Invitational, the latest highlight in a tremendous fall campaign for the program.

Head coach Jill Miller's team checks in at No. 29 in the Week 5 NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country National Coaches' Poll released on Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The 'Cats were announced Monday as the No. 2 team in the Midwest Region, up one spot after defeating now-No. 3 Illinois over the weekend in Peoria.

NCAA Cross Country Coaches' Poll - Week 5

With the Big Ten Championships just ten days away, there are five Conference teams in the USTFCCCA's final regular-season rankings, with Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan (who will host the B1G Championship in Ann Arbor) joining the 'Cats in the Top-30.

Rachel McCardell, who finished fifth at last year's Big Ten Championships, has led Northwestern in each of her last three starts and dropped her 6K time in every outing. Teammates Kalea Bartolotto, Ava Earl, Skye Ellis, Katherine Hessler, Anna Hightower and Ari Marks all have scored points for the team in those races, with Marks joining McCardell on the board in all three events.

The Wildcats last visit to the national rankings came at the end of the 2002 season, when the team rose as high as No. 27 in the country before finishing the season at No. 30. The NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country National Coaches' Poll is conducted by counting votes from 11 member coaches – one from each of the division's nine regions (who also do the regional rankings) – as well as two members from the NCAA Cross Country Executive Committee.
