EVANSTON, Ill. – The Wildcats fell to Penn State, 63-59, at Welsh Ryan Arena on Thursday night.
Three 'Cats hit double digits, with Veronica Burton leading the pack. She registered 16 points, seven assists and five steals. First year Caileigh Walsh followed with 11 and junior Laya Hartman added 10.
Courtney Shaw turned in an impressive performance on defense, pulling down a career-high 14 rebounds and leading the court with three blocks.
Northwestern and Penn State traded field goals for much of the first quarter, until Burton turned up the gas. She nailed a three before turning around and grabbing a steal for a fast-break layup, single-handedly building a 5-0 run and taking a strong lead.
Penn State found a response in the second quarter, but the 'Cats were able to hold them off. Shaw grabbed the rebound off a missed free throw to tie things up, 28-28, going into the halftime break.
The Wildcats cooled off during the third quarter, but stayed in the game with some success from beyond the arc. Northwestern and Penn State battled it out in the fourth, but the 'Cats came up short.
Northwestern will return to the court to face Maryland on the road this Sunday at noon CT.
