Northwestern Opens Season at UNC Invite and ITA Midwest Regionals

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern women's tennis kicks off the 2021-22 campaign with two events this weekend, with four 'Cats headed to Chapel Hill for the Kitty Harrison Invitational and six 'Cats headed downstate for the ITA Midwest Regionals in Champaign. 

Senior Clarissa Hand, juniors Briana Crowley and Christina Hand and sophomore Maria Shusharina will compete at the Kitty Harrison Invitational, hosted by North Carolina. Graduate Ema Lazic, seniors Vanessa Streng and Hannah McColgan and first-years Kiley Rabjohns, Sydney Pratt and Justine Leong will compete at ITA Midwest Regionals, hosted by Illinois. Four of the courts will be streamed live from Illinois's website here.

The Kitty Harrison Invitational features 14 teams in Duke, North Carolina, Virginia, Wake Forest, Auburn, Charlotte, Florida, Iowa State, Kansas, LSU, Northwestern, Old Dominion, Princeton and William & Mary. There will be 64 individuals competing in four 16-player compass draws and 32 doubles pairs competing in two draws of 16 teams each. 

Both Cl. Hand and Shusharina and ranked in the ITA Preseason Top 125 for singles. Crowley and Ch. Hand are ranked 30th in the Preseason Top 60 doubles rankings. Nine other doubles parings ranked in the top 30 should be in the field in Chapel Hill. 

Cl. Hand finished the 2020-21 season 13-5 in singles, and Crowley finished 14-6. Ch. Hand finished last year with an impressive 13-2 record in singles. Cl. Hand and Shusharina went 5-5 in 10 doubles matches together last year, while Crowley. and Ch. Hand went 8-2 in their outings as aa duo. 

The schedule for the Kitty Harrison Invitational is as follows: 
Friday - 1 doubles match, 2 singles matches
Saturday - 2 doubles matches, 1 singles match
Sunday - 1 doubles match, 1 singles match

There will not be live stats, but results will be posted each day. 

The ITA Midwest Regionals features a blind draw with singles and doubles, with the top finishers earning spots in the ITA Midwest Super Regionals on Oct. 22-26 at Ohio State University. The draws for both brackets will be available here once the event has started. Competition starts on Friday and runs through Monday.

Lazic comes to the Wildcats ahead of the 2021-22 season after a four-year career at Duke. She went 5-1 in doubles last year for the Blue Devils. 

McColgan went 4-3 in singles last year for the 'Cats and 12-6 in doubles, including five straight wins to close out the season. Streng is making her much anticipated return to the court after missing the 2020-21 season. 

Rabjohns, Pratt and Leong will be making their Wildcat debuts this weekend. Rabjohns and Pratt were both five-star recruits out of the state of Illinois, combining to give Northwestern a top-20 recruiting class nationally according to Tennis Recruiting Network. Leong comes to Northwestern after a season at Claremont McKenna in 2019-20 when she was an ITA All-American in singles and doubles and the ITA Division III National Rookie of the Year.
